Voice Over Internet Protocol System
VoIP stands for Voice over internet protocol. It refers to the transmission of voice traffic over an internet connection. It can be defined as the system of making phone calls through the internet, as opposed to an ordinary landline or mobile phone. A VoIP framework takes your voice signals, changes them into digital ones, and then sends them over your broadband line. VoIP phone system gives complete integrated communication.
How Does VoIP Works?
VoIP phone systems first convert a voice call into a digital signal, then transfers it through the internet as a non- VoIP Number, and then transforms it into a telephone analog signalVoIPvoIP phone call can be made out with any devices like computer, private phone or any other but it must relate to VoIP adapters. When a VoIP phone gets the digital information from a new device, it breaks the data into data packets and puts a destination address on all the boxes. After that, all the converted data is sent over a broadband line to the router. As the router receives the information, it will look for the shortest way to reach the destination address. The packets may pass through various routers to optimise the final route and receive the packet at the destination address. The accepting VoIP phone then uses the lessons for each packet to put the packets in the correct order. The VoIP operator then receives the data in an identifiable language. In VoIP business over a telephone system, a co-worker can use an office internet connection to connect their telephone network. A voice signal is broken into tiny data packets in a VoIP phone system. Long-distance calls are cheaper in VoIP systems. The network diagram for VoIP is shown below.
Types Of VoIP Phones
- Analog Telephone Adapter
- IP Phones
- Computer to Computer
Advantages of Voice Over Internet Protocols
The VOIP phone system is less expensive than any other network. VoIP phone system offers the standards feature required to run a business smoothly. VoIP helps in making or receiving calls through devices like (mobile phones, computers, tablets, and desk phones. Another advantage is that it gives a good sound quality with proper bandwidth and a good internet setup. VoIP phone systems have a feature that helps in the business plan.
- Caller ID
- Auto attendant
- Call waiting
- Hold music
- Call transferring
- Call Blocking
- Video conferencing
- Sharing online on multiple devices or phone
- Voicemail to Text
- Voicemail to Email
Other advantages of VoIP Phone System
- Virtual Phone number: VoIP allows users to choose a phone number with any area code because a VoIP number is not attached with its address or location.
- VoIP gives a good call quality. Several interruptions and interference in service are due to hiccups in transmission in POTS compared to VoIP phone systems.
- Attraction towards business – As the cost of calling on a VoIP phone is cheaper, it helps in cost saving. VoIP allows for voice communication and data integration in the most effective ways. It includes file transfers, video sharing, and analysing data.
- VoIP is most secure and effective: VoIP allows data and voice communication to run over in a single network which helps to reduce unwanted costs for infrastructure.
- Virtual assistant and tracking system: VoIP phone service also has a unique feature: an auto attendant, which can be called a virtual assistant. The virtual assistant service plays recorded music for callers on hold and messages. It also passes the call to individuals as well as departments.
- VoIP is flexible: VoIP is easier to scale up or down, and the changes you would likely make can be made remotely by your provider. The same goes for managing your features; in different cases, you can make the changes you want using a web interface (if you are using a softphone).
Disadvantages of Voice Over Internet Protocols
While VoIP has many advantages, similar to everything, it has a couple of disadvantages too, and they all connect with it being dependable under particular conditions. Some of the disadvantages of VoIP are
- VoIP is dependable on internet connection: VoIP systems are completely internet-based systems. So, you must have a strong internet connection with higher bandwidth and ensure your bandwidth can carry your VoIP service. If there is high internet traffic, it will affect the quality of calls.
- Potential Malware attacks: VoIP is vulnerable to various attacks such as Man in middle attacks, Call Tampering, Spamming over internet telephony, Denial of service, Viruses, and Malware. In Man in middle attacks, the attacker intercepts call signalling SIP message traffic and masquerades as the party’s calling party, and vice versa.
- Difficulty during Emergency calls: VoIP uses an IP address as a Phone number, and the exact geographic location cannot be traced with an IP address. If you are using traditional PSTN lines and you were not able to tell your address to the emergency operator, they can easily trace your address and help. Still, with VoIP, there is no way to find the caller’s precise location if they cannot tell the operator their address.
Conclusion
In Conclusion, the Use of VoIP not only help businesses only to save cost but also helps in the improvement of a sustainable environment. It helps in virtual faxing as well. With VoIP, everything can be done digitally, so that it will be paperless. Voice over internet protocol system is the latest means of telephone used in every business to replace the old landlines. Companies are finding it a desirable option as it saves them a lot of money without compromising reliability and dependability over the traditional phone system.
