How to Enable File Sharing in Oracle VirtualBox

Virtualization is a tool to run multiple operating systems. Among many virtual tools available, Oracle VirtualBox is a free tool for virtualization which can be easily downloaded here. It is useful for when you need to transfer files from the virtual machine onto the main machine or vice-versa. For transferring files, you can choose to do it by either using shared folders or using a USB. Below are the steps to set up your own VirtualBox extension package and the two methods of transferring files.

    Downloading VirtualBox extension package

The extension pack you are going to download and install is necessary to allow sharing files through USB 3.0. Also, it will eliminate certain inconveniences you may face while using VirtualBox. To download the package, please follow this link to the download page and you will find extension packages as shown in the below screenshot. Please note that you might need to update your VirtualBox to the latest version.

    Installing VirtualBox extension package

Once the download is completed, you will need to install the package. You can either click on the package or through preferences. It is recommended that you click on preferences and then select the extension as shown below to install the extension package.

    Transferring files using shared folders

Now, for the first method of transferring files, you will follow the below steps to share your files using shared folders.

    1. Begin the process by selecting Settings.
    1. Choose “Shared Folders” and then select the folder you want to share. Please note that the location of the folder will be required in the Folder Path field. Below is an example of how a path could look like.
    1. Click OK.

For this method, there is a limit to the number of files you can share. It also does not allow direct file sharing from the virtual machine to the main machine which brings us to the second method of file sharing which is through a USB.

    Transferring files using USB

Another method of file sharing is through a USB stick. To do so, you can follow the following steps:

    1. Go to Settings and select USB
    1. With the extension package you just installed, it will allow an option of USB 3.0 so you can select that and click OK.
    2. When you plug in the USB stick, it will show up on both the main machine and the virtual machine. If it is not showing up on the virtual machine, click on the USB icon and the issue should be fixed.

As mentioned, the shared folder method might not work every time, so the USB method is better when it comes to sharing files. However, if both methods fail, then you can consider sharing your files over the internet by following the steps provided in this blog.
