Accessing a Windows External Hard Drive on Mac

It’s not uncommon for users to have both Mac and Windows systems in their homes. Often, you may want to share files between a Windows external hard drive and a Mac. While this can be tricky, there are several solutions that allow you to access your Windows external hard drive on MacOS. In this blog, we’ll explore step-by-step instructions on how to do this.

    Step 1. Format Compatibility Check

Most Windows external hard drives are formatted in NTFS (New Technology File System), which is not natively supported by MacOS. You will need to install additional software to enable reading from and writing to NTFS drives on Mac.

Step 2. Install NTFS for Mac

You can use third-party software such as Paragon NTFS for Mac or Tuxera NTFS. These applications allow Mac users to access and write to NTFS drives seamlessly.

    • Download and install Paragon NTFS for Mac
    • After installation, connect your external hard drive to your Mac, and the drive should appear in Finder.

Step 3. Alternative Method – Reformat the Drive

If you don’t want to install third-party software, you can format the external hard drive to a file system that’s compatible with both MacOS and Windows. The exFAT file system is ideal for this.

    • To reformat the drive, open Disk Utility on your Mac, select your external drive, and click “Erase”.
    • Choose “exFAT” as the format and proceed with the reformatting process.

Accessing a Windows external hard drive on MacOS is easy once you understand the file system compatibility. By either installing software or reformatting your drive, you can successfully share files between Mac and Windows devices.
