One of the problems you can come across on your Windows devices as a home user is battery issues. Some issues can be fixed easily whereas others might require a more complicated fix. Laptops’ battery life cycles vary between models so sometimes it can be a struggle for most home users to identify and fix the issues. The causes of a battery issue could range from having a number of applications running in the background to dying out and simply needing a replacement. This blog will focus on ways to fix battery draining issues for a Windows laptop.
Background Applications
Most of the time the issue is minimalistic so it is hard to figure out what the real problem is. One of the main reasons a battery drains really fast is that there are a few applications running in the background. You can access the information and make the adjustment by following the four steps:
- Start -> Settings
- Select Privacy
- Select “Background apps” from the menu on the left
- Depending on what applications are required, you can toggle unimportant applications to “Off”, stopping them from running in the background and boosting your laptop’s battery life cycle.
Battery Saver
Another good way to help prolong your laptop’s battery life cycle is turning on the battery saver. In order to access the battery saver option, please follow the four following steps:
- Start -> Settings
- Select System
- Select “Battery” from the menu on the left
- You can then adjust the setting and turn on the automatic battery saver by ticking the box and adjusting the percentage. Please note that if your battery is draining very quickly, you might need to consider picking a higher percentage.
Hibernation
Hibernating can cause quick battery drainage and slow down the laptop so it is recommended that hibernation is disabled. To disable the option to hibernate, run the command prompt as an administrator and then enter the command “powercfg -h off” as shown in the below screenshot.
After the command is run, you can restart your laptop and there will not be an option to hibernate.
Fast Start-up
The purpose of the fast start-up option on Windows is to start the laptop quickly. However, doing so drains the battery quickly and disables the user to access the options. In order to disable the fast start-up,
- Start -> Settings
- Choose System
- Click “Power & sleep” > Additional power settings
- Finally, select “Choose what the power buttons do”
- Deselect “Turn on fast startup (recommended)”
